Exploring The Mazatlán Malecón

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

Nestled in the heart of the northern state of Sinaloa, Mexico, lies the picturesque city of Mazatlan, a place where our journey recently took us. This vibrant city, known for its warm-hearted locals, mouthwatering cuisine, and awe-inspiring sunset panoramas, holds a special place in our hearts, particularly for my wife Daniela, as it happens to be her hometown.

Our adventure began at the very outset of the malecón, a prominent boardwalk that boasts the title of the world's longest. However, there's a bit of confusion surrounding its actual length. While the oceanfront promenade stretches approximately 7 kilometers, various loosely defined sections add up to create an impressive 21-kilometer span. But whether it's 7 or 21 kilometers, one thing is undeniable – the malecon is a breathtaking sight, especially when the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the Pacific Ocean. Interestingly, Mazatlan is also the birthplace of Pacifico, the beloved Mexican beer.

As we strolled along the malecón, we couldn't help but notice the stark contrast in living costs compared to our usual residence in Bucerias, Nayarit. Mazatlan, with its affordability, seemed like an oasis in the scorching summer heat, a sentiment we couldn't help but appreciate.

Considering Daniela's pregnancy and my overall laziness, we opted for a unique form of transportation – a pulmonía. Exclusive to Mazatlan, these quirky little cars whisk both tourists and locals across the malecón, making it an efficient and enjoyable way to explore the city.

Our journey led us to the charming Olas Altas neighborhood, where thirst compelled us to venture deeper into the historic heart of Mazatlan. Our first stop was La Plaza Republica, adorned in preparation for Mexico's Independence Day celebrations on September 16th. The festive ambiance was infectious, setting the tone for a memorable evening.

However, a minor hiccup arose when we discovered that the nearby Oxxo convenience store wasn't serving beer on that Sunday evening. Undeterred, we made our way to another delightful spot, Plazuela Machado. This quaint and traditional plaza was adorned with numerous restaurants and vendors, and it didn't take us long to find cold beverages to quench our thirst.

Our culinary journey culminated at Taqueria Sobrinos, where we indulged in traditional Mazatlan cuisine. One particular delight caught our attention – the Chorreada, a tantalizing fusion of taco and tostada. Its crispy yet chewy texture was a delightful surprise, enhanced by the inclusion of asiento, a savory concoction of cooked pork fat. Trust us, it's far more delectable than it may sound, and we wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try.

As we wrapped up our day in Mazatlan, the feeling of being at home in this Mexican gem only grew stronger. The welcoming smiles of its people, the convenience it offers, and the majestic views of the ocean have etched a special place in our hearts. Every time we return, it's like coming home to a beloved haven, making Mazatlan a destination we'll cherish forever.
